Dr. Stephen Porges is the founder of the SSP., an auditory intervention designed to strengthen the Ventral Vagal System, which is also known as the Social Engagement System. It works through stimulating the inner ear, which affects a prominent cranial nerve (X) that runs throughout the brain, impacting your auditory, facial, respiratory, cardiac, and digestive systems. This cranial nerve is implicated in many physiological functions, which is how trauma can exert such a strong impact on how you feel, your behavior, and ultimately your health. When you experience trauma, the fight/flight/freeze response, which is associated with the Dorsal Vagal system, inhibits the Ventral Vagal System. The vengtral vagal system mediates hyperarousal, fight/flight, on one side, or hypoarousal, or numbing/freezing on the other side, through the SES. The SSP tones the vagus nerve, restoring your access to the SES.

The SPS requires an hour of listening to treated music through a particular set of headphones each day for 5 consecutive days. It is not a replacement for psychotherapy. It facilitates and enhances psychotherapy by inducing a physiological response that permits a calm, centered and grounded nervous system, which will allow you to enter therapy with greater ease, or make progress through challenging histories with greater comfort.
